What About a Media Keyboard?

If you’re looking for a wireless keyboard because you’re setting up a media PC to hook up to your TV, keep in mind that there’s a subset of wireless keyboards made specifically with this use case in mind. Entertainment keyboards, sometimes called “media center keyboards” or «lapboards,» are all-in-one solutions made to work on your lap, rather than sit on a surface. Most are long, and some have larger-than-ordinary keys. Some models also have an underside surface contoured to rest on your lap. They also always have a touchpad or other mouse substitute to make input control more manageable, with no separate mouse required.

Most such boards are made for navigating web browsers and media players like Plex, or for PC gaming. Because they’re designed for only occasional typing, they often don’t make for the best general-use keyboards (though there are exceptions). Still, the best ones, including our recommendations, are well-suited to their specific tasks.

If you’re interested in a smaller alternative, check out the Obinslab Anne Pro 2. Its ergonomics aren’t quite as good, and it lacks some of the extra features of the Razer BlackWidow V3 Pro, but it has a smaller compact 60% size and is available with a wider range of switch types. While it’s substantially lighter and only made of plastic, it feels very sturdy and well-built. You can connect it wired with the included USB-C charging cable or wirelessly via Bluetooth, and you can wirelessly pair it with up to four devices. It has full RGB backlighting, all its keys are macro-programmable, and it’s available with a variety of Gateron, Cherry MX, and Kailh switches. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a wrist rest or multiple incline settings, and it lacks arrow keys, which may be a concern for some people.

If you’d like a mechanical keyboard with better ergonomics and extra features, go with the Razer, but if you want a smaller, compact keyboard that’s available with a wider range of switch types, get the Obinslab.

Bluetooth? RF? There’s More Than One Way to Wireless

Wireless keyboards (and wireless mice, too) use two primary technologies to connect to devices: Bluetooth, or a 2.4GHz radio-frequency (RF) connection. The latter connects to your device via a USB dongle; Bluetooth models assume your host computer supports Bluetooth, or you have your own Bluetooth dongle. Each connection type offers distinct advantages and disadvantages.

In modern keyboards, 2.4GHz RF offers a stable connection and, at times, a near-imperceptible amount of typing lag. No desktop or laptop has built-in support for these keyboards; you need that USB dongle. And because a USB dongle is an extra part, you can lose it if you often swap it between systems or carry your keyboard around. Some keyboards have a storage slot for their dongles, which is great, but it’s still a tiny part you need to keep track of. The dongles are often keyed to the specific keyboard you own, so losing one can mean the keyboard is out of commission for good. Models that support a more forgiving RF dongle, like the ones with Logitech’s Unifying technology, can work using a replacement dongle or another device’s dongle. However, these are the exception, not the rule.

Bluetooth connections are reliable, but slightly more prone to lag and/or momentary connection loss, especially when you have many Bluetooth connections going on in one place (such as an office or a coffee shop). These issues do resolve themselves, and can often be fixed simply by re-establishing the connection if they don’t, but they can be an annoyance. Bluetooth also tends to drain a keyboard’s battery faster. On the plus side, though, devices with Bluetooth support can connect to phones, tablets, and other devices without a USB port.

The bottom line? It’s nice to have both. The 2.4GHz RF kind is generally the better connection type, especially if you’re planning on connecting to one, stationary PC. Bluetooth adds a lot of versatility, though. Not only can you connect to more devices, but having it is a nice safety net if you forget the USB dongle. In keyboards made in the last two or three years, you’re most likely to see keyboards with just a 2.4GHz connection, though there are a few Bluetooth-only options. Some keyboards support both connections. I would urge you, though, to not count out a keyboard just because it relies solely on Bluetooth, as you may not even notice a difference if you’re using it at home.

In addition to 2.4GHz and Bluetooth, any good wireless keyboard lets you directly connect to a device using its charging cable. Without this option, there’s always a chance that you’ll forget to charge the keyboard or replace its batteries, and you may find yourself temporarily unable to use it. Models that rely on disposable AA or AAA batteries, though, likely don’t have a USB connection option.

While it’s by no means a deal breaker, connecting via USB Type-C at the keyboard end is generally better than a micro-USB connection, as USB-C is easier to plug in and the port may enable faster charging under some circumstances. What matters most, though, is that you have a cable option of some kind.

The Logitech MX Keys is the best wireless keyboard for office use that we’ve tested. This full-sized model has a fairly small footprint since it has very thin borders, giving you more space for other office supplies on your desk. Its frame is made of metal, and the keys are made of dense, good-quality plastic, making the keyboard feel quite sturdy overall.

It offers a great typing experience and shouldn’t cause fatigue over time. It uses scissor switches that feel light and responsive, and the keys have a small indentation to help you type faster and with fewer typos. You can connect it via Bluetooth or with its USB receiver and pair it with up to three devices at the same time. It also has white backlighting that makes it easier to work in a dark environment.

Unfortunately, its ergonomics are only decent, as it’s a straight keyboard with no incline settings and no wrist rest. Also, the Logitech Options software is somewhat disappointing in terms of customization options, though it’s likely good enough for most daily or office uses. All in all, this is a very good option for the office, and it’s one of the best keyboards for writers that we’ve tested.

If you prefer a more ergonomic model for office work, check out the Logitech ERGO K860 Wireless Split Keyboard. It’s not as versatile as the Logitech MX Keys, and it doesn’t have any backlighting, but it has a curved design and a wrist rest, resulting in outstanding ergonomics. It uses tactile scissor switches with a noticeable bump before actuation and offers excellent typing quality once you get used to its particular shape and split-key layout. Unfortunately, there isn’t any onboard memory to save your settings, and you can’t macro-program any key, but it’s possible to customize some of them with a list of preset commands.

If you want a very good and versatile office keyboard, choose the MX Keys, but if you want an ergonomic model, then the ERGO K860 is an amazing choice for office use.

The Fundamentals of Buying a Keyboard

Beyond connectivity and battery life, there’s no difference between picking a standard, wired keyboard and a wireless one, though you are picking from a much smaller range of options.

KEY LAYOUT. Most wireless keyboards are full-size, meaning they have 104 keys or more, including a number pad. Most particularly productivity-focused models, use low-profile scissor-switch keys, similar to what you’d find in a laptop. This keeps their dimensions slim, making them more portable and helping to maintain the sleek, minimalist look popularized by Apple’s Magic Keyboard. With that in mind, the best wireless keyboards don’t overcommit to that aesthetic so much that the keys feel bunched together too closely. Mechanical keyboards tend to be wired models, more often than not, though there are exceptions.

EXTRA FEATURES. Generally speaking, wireless keyboards tend to come with some quality-of-life features, such as dedicated media and macro keys. A few, like Logitech’s high-end keyboards, also come with the ability to connect to multiple devices and swap among them with a single button press. Gaming keyboards will come with the same suite of media and macro perks, and some include customizable RGB lighting and advanced configuration software.

There are also a few features you’re unlikely to find. Though a few keyboards on our list come with a wrist rest, it’s less likely that a wireless keyboard will include one. Also, without a wired connection, it would be impossible for a keyboard to offer USB passthrough ports on the body, so that’s not something you’ll find, either.

OTHER SWITCH TYPES. Among wireless keyboards, you’ll spot the occasional model using membrane or mechanical key switches. Membrane keyboards actuate, triggering the signal that goes to your computer, by pushing down a rubber dome at the base of the key. Mechanical keyboards do the same via a physical switch with a spring or other tactile actuator. Relative to scissor switches, both types of keyboards provide more key-press travel, which leads to a more comfortable typing experience. Many people prefer the low action and light touch of scissor switches, though, so this ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Like standard keyboards, mechanical keyboards generally offer a better typing feel and better build quality than membrane-switch keyboards, but they are also considerably more expensive. The two major benefits to a wireless mechanical keyboard are its more decisive feedback, and the longer travel, both of which allow for more confident typing. Also, if you like the clack a keyboard makes, mechanical keyboards make more noise and, according to some, a more appealing sound. At the moment, most, but not all, wireless mechanical keyboards are gaming-focused.

Last, but not least, in the last year or so, multiple companies have produced wireless ergonomic keyboards, which use an alternative key-layout shape to minimize repetitive stress injuries in your hands, wrists, and arms. The wireless ergonomic keyboards we’ve seen employ a curved, unibody design that prevents you from twisting your wrist. They are, by and large, helpful if you experience wrist or arm pain when you type, though they can take some getting used to when you first switch to one from a standard keyboard.

The best Bluetooth keyboard for TV usage that we’ve tested is the Corsair K83 Wireless Entertainment Keyboard. It’s designed to be used with a smart TV and has a ton of extra features to this effect, like a built-in trackpad, a joystick, and L/R mouse click buttons directly on the board. It also feels very well-built as it’s made with a mix of metal and dense plastic that gives it a rather premium look.

It has good typing quality, with scissor switches that feel light, though maybe a bit mushier than other keyboards. It also has customizable white backlighting, which is great for when you want to watch TV in a dark room. You can connect it with three different devices at the same time, and it’s easy to switch between them. Plus, it’s fully compatible with both Windows and macOS, and all the main typing keys work on iOS and iPadOS. The keyboard is small and lightweight, so you should be able to use it comfortably while sitting on a couch.

Unfortunately, the ergonomics are only decent, as it’s a straight board with no incline settings and no wrist rest, but at least it has a flat, low profile design, so typing on it shouldn’t cause fatigue. Also, the spacebar of our unit has a small squeak when being pressed, as if air was being pushed out, but your experience may vary. All in all, if you are looking for a wireless keyboard to use with your TV, this is a great choice.

The best wireless keyboard we’ve tested in the budget category is the Kensington Pro Fit Ergo Wireless Keyboard. This full-sized model has a split-key layout with a fixed wrist rest and feet that create a negative incline. Its build quality is decent enough and is comparable to other curved boards we’ve tested. You can pair it wirelessly with two devices via Bluetooth or with its USB receiver.

The rubber dome switches it uses require some force to get over the tactile bump, but otherwise, they feel fairly light to type on. They also have a short pre-travel distance, which results in a responsive feel. While the layout of the keys might take some time to get used to, you shouldn’t feel too much fatigue when typing for long periods. The keyboard is very quiet, so it shouldn’t bother people around you even if you’re in a noise-sensitive environment.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have any companion software, so you can’t really customize the keyboard. Also, the keys feel fairly mushy and wobbly, and the board has a lot of flex to it. There’s no backlighting, so it’s not ideal to use in darker environments. Nevertheless, this is a great wireless keyboard if you’re on a budget, and it’s one of the best ergonomic keyboards we’ve tested.

Из негативных моментов: найти какое-то разнообразие среди беспроводных клавиатур, которые порадуют геймера, практически невозможно. К примеру, найти беспроводную игровую мышь не составит труда. 

Типы беспроводного соединения клавиатуры

Всего их 2: посредством радиопередатчика и через Bluetooth.

1. Радиопередатчик. Сигнал передается по радиочастоте, проходит все препятствия, так что пользоваться таким девайсом можно и с 10 и с 20 метров. Большинство моделей коннектится именно таким образом.
2. Bluetooth. Практически тоже самое, но дальностью ограничивается 7-10 метрами. Встречается довольно редко.

Питание осуществляется либо от сменных батареек, либо от аккумулятора .

Субъективно:

Все топовые игровые модели по-прежнему оснащены проводом. С современной подсветкой, инфодисплеями и встроенным ПО достаточно сложно управиться обычной паре батареек, тут уж ядерный аналог из Фоллаута нужен. Но мы, как известно, лёгких путей не ищем и нашли несколько вариантов, которые подойдут для более или менее комфортной игры. Но они не сравнятся по ощущениям и функционалу с проводными. Еще одна важная особенность — зачастую беспроводная клава просто создана для подключения к разнообразным мобильным гаджетам вроде планшета или смартфона. Тут сразу на места становятся смысл компактности и минималистиности  дизайна.

The best wireless mechanical keyboard we’ve tested is the Razer BlackWidow V3 Pro. It has a sturdy-feeling plastic body and an aluminum faceplate that exhibits very little flex. There’s also an included wrist rest and multiple incline settings, so you’re unlikely to experience any fatigue, even when using it for long periods.

It connects wirelessly with a USB receiver or over Bluetooth, and you can pair up to three devices wirelessly. However, you can also use it in wired mode with the included USB-C charging cable. It has full RGB backlighting with individually-lit keys, extremely low latency, a volume wheel, and dedicated media keys. You can program macros to any key either directly on the keyboard or with the companion software. The unit we tested has clicky Razer Green switches that require only moderate force to operate, have short pre-travel distance, and provide great typing quality overall. If you’d prefer quieter switches without tactile feedback, it’s also available with linear Razer Yellow switches.

Unfortunately, this keyboard takes up a lot of space, especially with the wrist rest attached, and the companion software isn’t compatible with macOS. Despite this, it’s an extremely versatile keyboard with excellent overall performance, and it’s the best wireless mechanical keyboard we’ve tested.

Далеко не самые безобидные недостатки, верно? У проводных моделей есть масса плюсов (о них мы говорили не так давно в своей статье о том, как выбрать игровую клавиатуру), но все же тенденция к эргономизации всего и вся поглотила практически все сферы рынка гаджетов. Это чертовски удобно — таскать за собой девайс по всему дому и легко перевозить в сумке без спутавшихся в итоге проводов.

Но есть и серьезные нюансы, которые могут повлиять на то, что беспроводной девайс подойдет «не под каждую руку». Я насчитал аж три таких:

Требуют регулярной подзарядки.

Да пусть она хоть год работает без выключения, ты обязательно забудешь подзарядить её или сменить батарею аккурат перед важным рейдом или перед сдачей особо важной работы начальству. Не всегда обладают необходимой компактностью

Вопрос дизайна — вот, бывает, лежит компактная и удобная клава, которая практически вдвое меньше проводного аналога. Сразу понимаешь, зачем у нее в названии присутствует «wireless». Другой раз перед тобой оказывается просто химерная махина, и становится понятно, что провод бы ситуацию усугубил чуть более чем никак.

Не решает большинства проблем проводных аналогов.

Ни количество одновременных нажатий, ни структура самой механики внутри устройства не меняются от отсутствия провода. Не зря ведь она называется «беспроводная», а не «решающая все вечные баги и глюки». А вот маркетологи некоторых компаний-производителей, похоже, считают иначе. Лишение провода будто бы подталкивает их использовать еще большее количество слов типа «эргономичность» и его производных.

Именитые производители пока не спешат выпускать качественный геймерский продукт на wireless основе. Оно и понятно — батареек в каком-нибудь беспроводном варианте Orion Spark хватит на пару недель.

Субъективно:

Самые эргономичный тип клавиатуры среди наиболее эргономичных аналогов на рынке эргономичных клавиатур (эй, берите меня в отдел рекламы!) определенно имеет свои нюансы. Он действительно пригодится тем, кто хочет пользоваться клавой, удаляясь от рабочего места (насколько это позволяет радиус передатчика), и лишает владельца проблем перепутанных, запыленных проводов за столом. А вот модели без специального нескользящего покрытия ерзают по столу при усиленном отбивании ритмов. Тем, кто хочет более или менее качественный продукт, придется раскошелиться.
